1

BALOS LAGOON

LOCATION

Approximately 56km northwest of Chania and 17km northwest of Kissamos.

For more detailed direction

check out Google Map here.

WHY RECOMMENDED:

Stunning scenery while walking down.

Beautiful lagoon with crystal clear water, perfect for swimming.

Turquoise waters, white sand with pink spots, and mountains around make it very unique and exotic.

It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world (Traveler's Choice, Tripadvisor).

GOOD TO KNOW:

The road access is quite difficult through the narrow, cliffside mountain road (driving on the unpaved road takes about 20 minutes,  walking down 15-25 mins).

Walking down may be challenging, but you get better views than when going by boat.

Usually, it gets very crowded in the middle of the day.

There are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent and a little shop with cold drinks and food.

2

ELAFONISI BEACH

LOCATION

It lies in the southwestern side of Crete and about 75 kilometers from the town of Chania.

For more detailed direction

check out Google Map here.

WHY RECOMMENDED:

The sand is mainly white, but in many places also pink (due to the smashed shells and coral).

The lagoon is very shallow and warm what makes it perfect for families with small children.

There is a large parking lot next to the beach with easy access.

ALSO GOOD TO KNOW:

The beach is one of the most popular places in Crete and gets very crowded during hot days.

It is well organized with sunbeds and umbrellas.

It’s part of a protected area, and collecting the pink sand (something that many people try to do) is strictly forbidden.

3

FALASSARNA

It is very long (3 km) with plenty of space, and it almost never feels crowded.

The sea is very clean and with beautiful colors because of the mostly sandy bottom.

It is facing the west which makes it a great place to watch the sunset.

LOCATION:

West coast of Crete, 59 km from Chania.

For more detailed direction

check out Google Map here.

WHY RECOMMENDED:

The beach is exposed to westerly winds, so there are often big waves.

There are few taverns and beach bars in the area where you can find something to eat and drink.

KEDRODASOS

4

LOCATION:

76km southwest of Chania and 1km east of the Elafonissi Beach.

For more detailed direction

check out Google Map here.

WHY RECOMMENDED:

It is a beautiful wild beach with clean waters, natural rocky pools, soft white sand, and many cedar trees around.

Great place if you want to avoid crowds.

Perfect for those who want to enjoy nature and do some snorkeling (many rocks around).

GOOD TO KNOW:

There are no shops, sunbeds or umbrellas on the beach.

The road is rather hard, and it involves 10 min walk on a very rocky path.

The only way to get a shadow is under the trees, which sometimes is taken by free campers.
